DIGITAL SOVEREIGNTY – Infrastructure Matters

The choice of the right IT infrastructure is the foundation of digital sovereignty in the public sector.

Digital sovereignty in public administration does not begin with software or cloud services. It begins with the infrastructure that underpins them.

As public services become increasingly digital, dependence on secure, resilient, and future-ready data centre infrastructure continues to grow. For municipalities, it is no longer enough to know where their data is processed. They must also consider who controls the underlying infrastructure, which legal jurisdictions providers are subject to, and how effectively they can respond to disruptions or manage a future provider transition.

At the same time, new challenges are emerging, from compliance with Germany’s Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) to rising power densities and the growing demands of AI-driven workloads.

In his guest article for Kommune21, Georg Raiser, Managing Director DACH at AtlasEdge, explains why choosing the right IT infrastructure is becoming a critical pillar of municipal digital sovereignty.
